DJJ in the Community: DJJ Staff Volunteer at Atlanta Food Bank
Recently, staff members from DJJ’s Office of Nutrition and Food Services volunteered at Open Hand, one of the largest community-based providers of home-delivered meals and nutrition services in the United States. Jessika Anderson, Natasha Banks, Lauren Gean, Rasheedah Harris and Stephanie Henesy spent the morning packing meals at Open Hand’s distribution center.
Open Hand distributes over 5,300 nutritious meals a day to patients with chronic diseases as well as the homebound elderly and families in need of food assistance in Metro Atlanta. The mission of Open Hand is to help people prevent or better manage chronic disease through comprehensive nutrition care – which combines home-delivered meals and nutrition education to reinforce the connection between informed food choices and improved quality of life. Open Hand has been serving Metro Atlanta for 30 years.
“Volunteering at Open Hand was an amazing experience and a great teambuilding exercise,” said Jessika Anderson, Dietitian for the Office of Nutrition and Food Services. “We spent the morning packing meals for those in need with special dietary restrictions. I am proud to be part of an agency that is dedicated to serving the community.”
