Dougherty CSO: Read Across America Day

The National Educational Association's Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2nd, the birthday of famed children's author Dr. Seuss. The purpose of Read Across America Day is to motivate children to read as reading is an important factor in student achievement and in personal fulfillment in becoming a lifelong reader.

As it did in 2017, the Dougherty Community Services Office (Dougherty CSO) participated in Read Across America Day by speaking to and reading books to several classes at the Lamar Reese Magnet School of the Arts and the Whitney Headstart Center, both located in Albany. Led by JPM Linfred Davis, JPPS II Afiya Askew and Mitchell CSO JPPS II Mollie Pollock, DJJ staff members were able to share exciting and inspiring stories to help encourage readers to use their own personal voice for positive change.

The Department of Juvenile Justice would like to thank these District Ten volunteers for encouraging the love of reading in their local communities. For more information on Read Across America Day, visit http://www.nea.org/grants/886.htm.
