Georgia Preparatory Academy Celebrates Youth Achievements at Graduation Ceremony
On Tuesday, December 17, the Georgia Preparatory Academy (GPA) held its graduation ceremony in Macon, Georgia, marking a significant milestone for youth within the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) system. The event honored the hard work and determination of the graduates, awarding seven high school diplomas, 21 GED diplomas, and 12 Technical Certificates of Credit (TCC).
The ceremony highlighted the achievements of class leaders, including the valedictorian from the Macon Youth Development Campus (YDC), the salutatorian from the Chatham County Education Transition Center (ETC), and the student with the highest GED score from the Bibb County ETC. These accomplishments underscore the commitment of DJJ and its educational partners to prepare youth for successful futures.
DJJ Commissioner Shawanda Reynolds-Cobb expressed her pride and optimism for the graduates, stating, “I am overjoyed to celebrate such an important milestone for our youth. Our graduates have bright futures ahead of them. I hope the next chapter of their lives is filled with a purpose to achieve their goals and help other young people who may find themselves in a similar position.”
Inspiring Words from Commencement Speaker Jamie “The Motivator” Hayes
Jamie “The Motivator” Hayes, a former justice-involved youth, delivered a powerful keynote address. Now an author, speaker, fitness trainer, and coach, Hayes shared his journey from being in the juvenile justice system to becoming a successful role model. His message focused on the importance of discipline, visualization, and character as keys to success.
“Twenty years ago, I never would have thought that little old me who went through juvenile [detention] would be standing in front of them talking about my journey,” Hayes said. “If they take on discipline and apply it to their lives, they will be here one day talking to others as well. I hope I have planted a seed.”
A Commitment to Career-Readiness and Education
DJJ’s partnership with the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) continues to prepare students for diverse career paths. Through the Career Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) program, graduates earned certifications in fields such as Barbering Fundamentals, Horticulture, Salon and Spa Support, Nursery/Greenhouse Technology, and Prep Cook. These certifications equip students with practical skills for immediate employment opportunities.
Dr. Letunya Walker, DJJ Deputy Superintendent of Schools, emphasized the value of education in transforming lives. “Our graduates are now part of our Connections Graduate Program, designed to prepare graduates for opportunities that require them to be intelligent, skilled, and critical thinkers. I am grateful that we have an awesome team that sees the value of education and motivates students.”
Transforming Lives Across Georgia
The graduation ceremony included students from various DJJ facilities across the state, including Youth Development Campuses (YDCs) in Atlanta, Eastman, Macon, and Milledgeville, and Regional Youth Detention Centers (RYDCs) in Aaron Cohn, Cadwell, Gainesville, Martha K. Glaze, Metro, Rockdale, Savannah, and Waycross. Education Transition Centers (ETCs) in Bibb, Chatham, and Muscogee counties were also represented.
DJJ operates GPA as the 181st school district in Georgia, providing a middle and high school curriculum that meets state standards. Pathway to Success, the GED program within the school system, ensures all students have access to quality education tailored to their needs.
