DJJ and Red Ribbon Week: Rockdale RYDC Red Ribbon Week Door Contest
Story information and photos from Dr. Jean Lee
During the week of October 23-31, students at the Rockdale Regional Youth Detention Center participated in a classroom door decorating contest as part of the facility’s Red Ribbon Week activities. While groups of students decorated their designated door, they learned about the dangers of drug use and took the pledge to live their lives drug-free. Budget Administrator Hilroy Wilson and Connections Graduate Program Coordinator Carrie Hamilton traveled from Central Office to serve as the contest judges. Some of the door themes included “Stomp Out Drugs,” “Drugs Are Trick Not Treat,” “Say No” and “Only A Duck Does Drugs, Be An Eagle.” Each group explained to the judges how their door encouraged others to be drug-free and what they learned during Red Ribbon Week.
The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation reaching millions of young people each year. Red Ribbon Week catalyzes to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Since 1988, the campaign has reached millions of children and families in the United States.
