DJJ Volunteer Services: Thank You to Veterans

Story support from Regional Volunteer Coordinator Ornessa Jones-Collins

At the Department of Juvenile Justice, military veterans are recognized for the heroic services they have provided over the years defending our country's security. This appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice of the men and women who make up America's armed services is part of the reason that DJJ offers a salary incentive for all newly hired employees with records of prior military service at secure facilities across the state.

However, the respect of our military veterans is not limited to the employees of the Department of Juvenile Justice.  Recently, youth at the Muscogee Youth Development Campus (Muscogee YDC) and Aaron Cohn Regional Youth Detention Center (Aaron Cohn RYDC) took time to design special "thank you" cards to the veterans of the HomePort Veterans Transition Home in Macon.

The "thank you" cards created by the youth at Muscogee YDC and Aaron Cohn RYDC were handmade and reflected their thoughtfulness for former members of the military. That simple gesture of recognition provided by the DJJ youth was greatly appreciated by the veterans who received the thank you cards.

The mission of the HomePort Veterans Transition Home is to work with other support organizations to provide affordable transitional housing and assist in the successful transition of homeless veterans and their families back into the main stream of society through vocational retraining, counseling and workforce development.
