Gainesville RYDC: Banking Skills

Story support and photo from Gainesville RYDC Director Herman Oglesby

Recently, youth at Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center (Gainesville RYDC) received the empowerment of learning the basic skills of banking and finance from a local expert. Mr. Derrick Allen, Branch Manager of Pinnacle Bank in Gainesville, visited the facility in January to discuss the importance of opening a checking or savings account, balancing a checkbook, and the differences between a fixed and flexible account.

During the presentation by Mr. Allen, the youth were given the assignment of completing financial worksheets to understand better the lessons being provided. While personal responsibility was stressed, youth were also taught the need to function in society as contributors.

The Department of Juvenile Justice would like to thank Pinnacle Bank of Gainesville and everyone who helped bring Mr. Allen to the Gainesville RYDC for his important presentation.  Special recognition goes out to Volunteer Coordinator Terrico Holland who helps spearhead the soft skills program in the facility.
