Statement on Augusta YDC Youth Passing

The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice is saddened to announce the passing of a youth housed at our Youth Development Campus (YDC) in Augusta, GA.

Around 11 a.m. this morning, a 17-year-old male collapsed inside the gymnasium while playing basketball. The youth was transported by ambulance to the Wellstar Medical Center in Augusta, where he later died.

Although there is no indication of foul play, the Department has requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), which will handle the incident investigation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the youth’s family and the YDC staff.
