Dr. Garry McGiboney

Garry McGiboney, Ph.D., is the Chief Operations Officer for Health Security Dynamics Consulting and Executive Director of Government Programs at Sharecare. Also, Dr. McGiboney is a consultant for the United States Department of Education Readiness Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) Technical Assistance Center. He was Deputy State Superintendent for the Georgia Department of Education for 14 years and prior to that he was the Deputy Superintendent for the DeKalb County School District. He serves on the Behavioral Health Reform and Innovation Commission, and he served two terms on the Georgia Supreme Court’s Justice for Children Committee. He Chairs the State Juvenile Alternatives to Detention Committee for the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, Chairs the Council on Alcohol and Drugs Board of Directors, serves as Vice President of the Georgia Parent Support Network, and is a charter member of the Get Georgia Reading Cabinet. Dr. McGiboney co-founded the Georgia Education Climate Coalition with a membership of over 80 organizations. His innovative work in school climate has led to policy and legislative initiatives in several states, including the School Climate Star Rating in Georgia. His pioneering work in human error in school safety has resulted in national, state, and local training on the topic, including webinars, table-top exercises, a podcast and an online course on human error for the REMS Technical Assistance Center. He also does Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management training for REMS.
Dr. McGiboney has over 40 professional journal publications and has authored eight books. His book The Psychology of School Climate 2nd Edition is often referenced by researchers and legislators. His book An Epidemiological Study of Leadership is being used by graduate schools and non-profits for internship programs. He authored an inspiration book, Leading Us Out of Darkness and a book of poetry, Timberline of the Mind. Additionally, he is the co-author of Language as a Missing Link Toolkit published by the Sandra Deal Literacy Center. The toolkit is being used by schools, Regional Education Service Agencies, colleges, non-profits, and others.
Dr. McGiboney has received local, state, and national awards, including National Association of School Psychologists National Friend of Children Award; National Alliance on Mental Illness Community Service Award; United States Environmental Protection Agency Health Hero Award; Georgia School Counselors Advocate of the Year Award; Georgia Association of School Nurses Hero Award (twice); Mental Health America-Georgia Board Member of the Year Award; DeKalb NAACP Educator of the Year Award, and others. Dr. McGiboney was inducted into the Georgia University System Board of Regents Alumni Hall of Fame. Recently, he received the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Georgia Association of Positive Behavior Supports and the award will henceforth be named in his honor as the Dr. Garry McGiboney Outstanding Leadership Award.
