Rome RYDC: Facility Arts Project
Recently, female residents at the Rome Regional Youth Detention Center (RYDC) participated in a service learning project to remember senior citizens at the Meadowbrook Health and Rehab Nursing Home on Father’s Day. Coordinated by a team from DJJ’s Office of Volunteer Services, the youths worked together to create colorful Father’s Day cards to donate to the nursing home. The girls cut the cards in necktie shapes and wrote phrases on the back of the card describing what it means to be a father.
The Volunteer Services Team including Sara Gardner, Diana Lindsey and Kareem Pollard made a presentation about Elder Abuse Awareness Month and how elder abuse impacts the community as well as the victim.
“The girls were very enthusiastic about the project and enjoyed the chance to express themselves creatively,” said Volunteer Services Gardner.
DJJ’s Office of Volunteer Services is always seeking volunteers willing to take on challenging work with our young offenders in secure facilities and community programs. Volunteers have opportunities to serve in many capacities to help motivate and empower youths to become productive and law-abiding citizens when they’re released.
